Former Gatwick Airport Vehicles Donated to Support Motor Vehicle Training Across Chichester College Group

Three former Gatwick Airport Airfield Operations vehicles have been donated to support motor vehicle training across Chichester College Group.

A generous donation of three former London Gatwick Airfield Operations vehicles is helping bring real-world industry experience into motor vehicle and STEM training across Chichester College Group. The vehicles are now being used by students and apprentices as part of hands-on learning linked to engineering, diagnostics and modern vehicle systems.

The opportunity began after Stuart Miller from Gatwick contacted Crawley College and spoke to Marcus Ford, Lecturer in Motor Vehicle and Electric Vehicle at Crawley College, regarding the possible donation of fleet vehicles to support technical education and training.

Following discussions with Marcus and his department, a request was made for all three Chichester College Group motor vehicle sites, Crawley College, Chichester College and Shoreham College, to each receive a vehicle. Gatwick agreed and arranged delivery to each campus.

The Crawley College vehicle, a former London Gatwick Airfield Operations Mitsubishi Shogun, has already become a valuable teaching resource for apprentices and students. The vehicle remains fitted with many of its original operational features, including emergency lighting, roof-mounted equipment, airfield communication hardware and specialist airport livery.

Powered by a 3.2-litre turbo diesel engine, the vehicle was originally designed for demanding operational environments, making it a highly useful asset for students studying motor vehicle technologies and maintenance.

Bespoke vinyl graphics were also added to the vehicle, recognising the partnership between Gatwick Airport and Chichester College Group and highlighting its new educational role.

Students are able to work on a wide range of vehicle systems and components, including electrical systems, suspension, braking and diagnostics.

“Since acquiring the vehicles, apprentices are already benefiting from them, as they contain so many relevant systems for students to work on. A huge thank you to Gatwick Airport for this amazing gesture. It symbolises the continual partnership between industry and education, helping support both our students and the wider community,” said Marcus Ford, Lecturer in Motor Vehicle and Electric Vehicle at Crawley College.

London Gatwick is also a valued supporter of the Sussex & Surrey Institute of Technology, helping strengthen links between education and industry across the region. Chichester College Group greatly appreciates the continued support and partnership provided by Gatwick across a range of technical education and skills initiatives.
